Adverts are just one way of making money on your blog, but what should you advertise, where? And most importantly: how can you make sure you get paid for it?
The problem with the majority of new blogs is that you don’t have a large readership, and it’s unlikely that a large company is going to swoop in offering you millions to display their advert in a tiny little corner.
Step 1: Decide what products you will advertise
If you’re running a blog about running, then perhaps you might want to advertise some great running shoes. If it’s a knitting blog then yarn and needles might be the thing. Sit down and try and make a list of all the equipment, guides and accessories a person might want or need for the main topic of your blog.
Step 2: Sign up for affiliate programs for these products
Yup, you heard me. I’m not telling you to write to Nike and ask for a contract to display their advert on your site (though if it’s a smaller company this may work so give it a go), but join the affiliate program.
Step 3: Decide what kind of adverts you want to display
The most common type is 125×125 images (like you can see in the bottom of my sidebar). But you could also have text adverts, flash based adverts or different sized images.
Step 4: Install an adverts plugin and set it up.
My favourite plugin for WordPress is currently WP125 – it’s very easy to set up and you can set the adverts to rotate and also swap – so you can advertise several kinds of one item but only allow it to display one at a time.
Step 5: Put the adverts where someone will see them
I know that you probably don’t want the adverts to be in the face of your readers, but they need to be at least a little bit obvious otherwise they’ll just be ignored.
Step 6: Make sure you include adverts to your own products!
If you have any of your own products then include advertisements to them as well – and if possible have them set up to appear at a higher frequency than other products.
Now, these adverts won’t give you a guaranteed monthly income but they’re a start, right? If you’re looking to sell advertising space then include a “place your ad here” image and have it link to a contact form. The brilliance of affiliate adverts is that you will get paid if you sell any of the products, and of course, it looks like people are advertising on your blog which gives it an air of authority.
Do you have adverts on your blog? What do you think of them? Tell me in the comments!
